Forging a career in hydraulics at IMH
Instilled in all who work at IMH is the value of training and apprenticeships. And since 1995, when we officially launched our training programme, we’ve welcomed more than 25 apprentices.
Sam Bullock, who joined us last September as a first year Multi Skilled Apprentice completing day release at Hartlepool College has recently entered his second year of study. After a busy first year gaining experience both at college, and on and offsite with IMH Sam shares his thoughts so far on his apprenticeship and his dreams for the future.
What has been your highlight from your first year?
Alongside completing my college work on time and to a good standard, a highlight of the year was going to different sites to work on a variety of projects with the IMH team. With a key memory of gaining great experience whilst working on the linkspan at Fishguard.
What are you looking forward to learning more about and gaining more experience in, now that you’re in your second year?
Definitely gaining more onsite experience! As I feel I learn so much from the team and benefit from having different interactions with clients and being at different locations that I may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience. In my second year, I’m excited that the learning will be more tailored to my specific role within hydraulics.
Looking back on your first year, is there anything you would have done differently or anything you’ve learnt that will support you going forward?
In terms of doing anything differently there is nothing of note. However, what I have learnt and what I’ll take with me through to second year and my future career, is to make the most of all opportunities to learn – as this will help me going forward.
You’re completing your apprenticeship at IMH through your course at Hartlepool College of Further Education (HCFE). How have HCFE supported you in your apprenticeship so far?
The college has great facilities and delivers good instruction. I even get to benefit from the hydraulics and pneumatics lab that IMH has sponsored. The college has also been really flexible in allowing me to spend extra time away from college and on client sites. And has then supported me in any catch-up lessons I’ve needed.
How would you describe your time so far at IMH?
Joining IMH has been a great decision. The time I’ve spent so far in my apprenticeship has been really good and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every aspect. I feel that I’m being exposed to world-class training from IMH and can see that my own skills have improved and I’m really pleased and proud of that.
